Magazine Cover Analysis EMPIRE (Research Into Similar Products )

Empire is a British Magazine that is currently published by the Bauer Consumer Media every month. The film magazine was launched in July 1989 by the editor name Barry McIlheney that used to be published by Emap. The magazine became the best selling film magazine in Britain that competes with the magazine called 'Total Film'
The use of direct address given by Robert Downey Jr in this magazine cover entices the reader through the severe eye contact, and his positioning on the page gives him a superiority as he is a superhero. The genre is given away as the superhero 'IRON MAN' is big on the page suggesting action.
The writing also makes a bold statement on the page but Robert Downey Jr is still the more powerful image on the page.
The colours red and white, red suggesting danger and boldness and white complimenting it, almost as if the title Empire is trying to fit around Robert Downey Jr.
Looking at Empire Magazine I was able to establish how the use of magazine conventions are effective and entice the reader.
The background reflects the film Iron Man almost as if the reader is on the set with him, and this is effective as the reader feels more involved this is also reinforced by the cover star's use of direct address that entices the reader further.
When creating my magazine this will be the cover I would like to reflect as I want my main character to stand out on the page and I want the words to fit around the main image. I also like the use of the film title big and bold on the left hand side but no to overpowering. This is something I need to assess and plan when creating my magazine front cover.
